It was a pleasant surprise to spot this cucumber (variety: Marketmore, same plant) growing along the patio floor.

At the height of the summer, I was harvesting a cucumber every 2-3 days.

I raised this cucumber in a yoghurt pot and transplanted it into position after the frosts were gone. I cut some plastic off a coke bottle and wrapped around its base to protect from snails and slugs. This is necessary only when the plant is small. You will know when it is big! It will be rambling all over the place and the slugs and snails wont bother anymore.

I dont water any of my plants. I place kitchen scraps on the soil surface covering the base of the plant. This mulch prevents evaporation of water.

Cucumber (Marketmore), Pumpkin (Jack 'O Lantern) and Runner Beans (Enorma) all growing together on the garden fence. I used jute strings to support them.

The pumpkins didnt like this arrangement - they would produce small fruits that wouldnt develop into those huge halloween pumpkins. They would just fall off. Luckily I was growing backup pumpkins on the ground which we will look at now...
