I place kitchen scraps (usually uncooked) on the soil surface. When they start to break down, they compress and its time to add more. I also add a few earthworms from my garden to help. This is in-situ composting and I dont have a compost heap.

You can add cooked kitchen scraps too. Make sure you cover it well with dry bio-degradable material like cardboard or leaves to prevent bad odour.
